According to Muzo legend, there was a supreme god named Are, the creator of the land and the people of the Muzos. The supreme god became lonely, so he created the first two beings of the human race: Tena (man) and Fura (woman). The creator demonstrated to them the limits of their domains by teaching them how to cultivate the land, hunt, and defend against the beasts and strange beings who came to their territories. Are gave them healthy rules to live by, instilling freedom without limitations of any kind, and gave them the sun, the moon, and stars so that the two could sustain and enjoy life together in eternal youth and happiness. In addition, he granted them the privilege of perpetual youth, but love should be unique and exclusive between the two. The only way Fura and Tena could lose their immortality is by committing infidelity, which would bring aging and death to both.
One day, while Fura was completing her daily tasks came across a young man of a rare breed in search of a unique and miraculous flower. This particular flower had the properties to relieve all pains and diseases. Interestingly, he explored all the regions within the Muzo area to obtain this magical flower. Unfortunately, the western man named Zarbi was unable to locate the item he was seeking during his journey. Zarbi recalled meeting a young beautiful indigenous woman while searching for this impossible flower. He went to Fura hoping to find in her strong support for its purposes, explaining the benefits of the magnificent properties of such a plant. Fura was excited by the presence of the stranger Zarbi and amazed by his physical appearance. She wanted to keep seeing him, so she offered to help him find this magical flower. Zarbi was ecstatic when Fura accepted his offer to pursue the flower, so they both traveled the mountain and jungle areas daily. Fura and Zarbi realized that their feelings for each other were more than a platonic relationship. Fura started to feel love for Zarbi, which breached the sacred law of unique and exclusive love that was imposed on them by Are. The accusations from consciousness, the words of Are speaking from the depths of her soul, pushed Fura into sadness and with that aging, irrefutable proof of infidelity and an assured death announcement.
One night, Tena went to hold his wife while they were sleeping but she refused him. He knew something was different with her and sought to find out the answer to her erratic behavior. Tena already knew that Fura had done something atrocious, but refused to accept the truth that she committed infidelity. So, he told Fura that he will be going hunting early in the morning when in reality he was hiding on top of a tree to spy on Fura. When Tena found the two new lovers embraced, he felt anger and wielded his spear to defend his territory, but then fell to sadness and struck himself down with his hand. Fura realized her mistake looking down over her dead husband. Blood began to flow gushing from the wound, covering Fura’s feet with a purple quicksand, formed from the mixture of Tena’s blood and the dirt. She held his body in her arms for eight days and wept. Her tears of sorrow turned to emeralds as they fell from her face. Zarbi begged Are for forgiveness and Fura’s well-being, but Are was upset and turned Tena and Fura into a mountain. Are turned Zarbi into a bare rock to whip him with strands of rays from the sun’s mansion, the Muzos’ sky. Although Zarbi was immobile, he still had the power to defend and take revenge against the supreme god. Zarbi decided to tear his guts transforming all the blood that animated him in life, into a torrent of water, destroying all living things and flooding the land of the Muzos, but when confronting Fura with the corpse of Tena on her knees, the stormiest waters became angry, crashing against the spouses, isolating them forever and leaving them face to face, so that Fura could cry for eternity at the sight of her dead husband. The two figures of stone are two large mountains which are known as one name today, Furatena.
